“Investing in quality early learning programs is the most efficient way to affect school and life success and to reduce social expenditures later, according to research by Prof. James Heckman, a Nobel laureate in economics from the University of Chicago. Returns are greatest for the most at-risk children. Eckman contends, “The real question is how to use available funds wisely. The best evidence supports the policy prescription: Invest in the very young.”
In 1995 our in-school tutoring program began as outreach from Winton Place Youth Center and St. Bernard’s Church. In 2003 we became independent of the Youth Center and continued to serve Winton Hills Academy. In 2005-2006 Woman’s City Club became involved in the tutoring program and the following year opened a new site at Rothenberg Academy. Throughout the years, St. Bernard’s and Woman’s City Club continue to contribute and secure funding for the program.
However, hit by the recession in 2008 we all began to realize the need for an independent nonprofit. In 2013 with the help of University of Cincinnati Law School, students and faculty, we became a corporation and in August of 2014 were given tax exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service.
Your tax exempt donation empowers us to provide testing materials, tutoring bags with sensory materials, workbooks, books, incentives, pay partnership fees for our volunteer coordinator and lesson planner and more.
We end each tutoring year with a field trip where tutors and their students eat lunch together and then shop for books for the child to take home and continue reading throughout the summer. For many of these children this is the first book they’ve ever owned.
